Keeping your family safe from lead poisoning

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention considers lead poisoning the number one preventable childhood disease.  The best way to prevent lead poisoning is to remove all lead hazards your family may come in contact with.  The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Safety Council suggest the following ways to keep your family safe and remove potential lead hazards:

  • Remove all sources of lead-based paint in your home.  If your home was built before 1978, you should be extremely cautious when repainting or repairing your home.  If possible, it is ideal to hire professionals who are experienced in lead-based paint removal.  It is safest to move out of the home until the renovation is complete to ensure that dust and debris spreading through the home is not ingested by your family.

  • Keep your home as clean as possible.  If you are unable to repaint, you should keep your home as clean as possible and try to keep the amount of dust in the air to a minimum.  This can be done by wet mopping hard floors and wiping down walls with damp sponges or rags. Check your home for areas where paint is dusting, chipping, or peeling and clean these areas with a damp sponge or rag to remove the hazard.  It is most efficient to clean with soapy water that uses a cleaner with phosphates (such as dishwasher soap) or a lead-specific detergent.  Dispose of the sponge or rag once you are finished.

  • Contact your landlord if you live in a rented home.  If you live in a rented home, you should notify your landlord of the potential threat of lead exposure and ask that any lead hazards be removed from the home.  If your landlord does not take action, contact your community’s health department and request that someone inspect your home.  Your landlord may be required legally to fix the situation.

  • Wash hands often.  Encourage your family to wash their hands often, especially before meals to prevent the accidental ingestion of lead-based paint chips or dust.

  • Change out of clothes that may be contaminated with lead.  If you work around lead or have a hobby that involves lead, you should change your clothes and shoes before returning to your home.  When you bring these clothes homes, wash them immediately to reduce the potential risk of lead exposure to your family.

  • Check your water for lead contamination.  Lead is difficult to detect in water because you cannot see, taste, or smell it and you cannot get rid of lead by boiling water.  If you are unsure whether or not your drinking water is contaminated with lead, you can call the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800 426-4791 for information about water safety and available kits to test your water.  If you have lead pipes you should avoid using hot tap water for drinking, cooking, or mixing formula.  In the morning, it is ideal to run cold water for two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking.

  • Practice good nutrition.  Encourage your family to eat a well balanced diet that includes foods high in calcium and iron such as:  meat, beans, spinach, and dairy products.  Calcium and iron have been found to reduce the amount of lead absorbed by the body.

Beware of potential lead hazards outside your home.  Lead hazards can exist outside your home in older buildings and homes that your family visits.  When visiting these buildings your family should use caution and wash their hands often.
