Children and Lead Poisoning

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 434,000 children between the ages of one and five with elevated levels of lead in their blood. Such numbers are disappointing considering industry professionals have known since the early 19th century that lead poisoning can cause serious health problems, especially in children. Despite the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s 1978 ban against the use of lead-based paints in homes, the National Safety Council estimates that some 38 million homes still contain lead-based paint. Furthermore, approximately 25% of all U.S. homes contain some type of lead hazard.

Children under the age of seven are at the greatest risk of injury from lead poisoning because their brains and central nervous systems are still developing. If exposed, lead will accumulate in a child’s body ultimately causing irreversible damages that may not appear for many years.
